Amsterdam flights

Early summer flights to Amsterdam

KLM climbingAbout once a month I examine trends on the cost of flights to Amsterdam from major North American cities. And in late April 2008, things are looking pretty grim for June flights. I guess the good news is that the June prices aren’t much different from the May prices I found, and a couple of them were a bit cheaper in fact.

But overall this looks like it might be the most expensive year to fly to Amsterdam ever, and the crazy strength of the euro once you get there doesn’t help anything either. You can save money by staying in one of the many Amsterdam hostels, but I’m sure the beds are being reserved early this year because no one wants to risk getting shut out and having to pay €100 for a basic Amsterdam hotel room instead.

Late spring airfare to Amsterdam

Schiphol NorthwestIf you are planning an Amsterdam trip coming up soon and you haven’t yet booked your ticket this could be a tricky time to get a cheap flight to Amsterdam. I used to live in Amsterdam, but now I live in Portland, Oregon and I go back and forth doing research trips so I’m always investigating airfare trends and whatnot. Now that spring 2008 has arrived things are getting quite expensive and with the fuel surcharges going up lately there isn’t much reason to think these prices are going to go down much soon.

Since I’m always curious about airfare from all over and I frequently have friends asking me about this subject I’ve decided to report on this regularly here on Amsterdamlogue. You possibly saw my last installment when I reported on Spring 2008 airfare to Amsterdam early in the year. Take a look at that list and you’ll see how much prices have shot up in just a couple months. I’ve also added Toronto to the list, and I’ll keep checking that one as well since I have friends in Canada who occasionally fly to Amsterdam.

Iceland Air to Amsterdam with a free stopover

Reykjavik CityThis same deal has been going on for at least 10 years, and I’ve tried to schedule it myself quite a few times, but unfortunately it’s never worked out for me. Put simply, you can fly from a few different US cities to most of the major destinations in Europe on Iceland Air, and you can have a stopover in Iceland for up to 7 days for no additional charge. Better still, Iceland Air is usually one of the cheapest airlines on these routes anyway.

I’ve received Iceland Air’s e-mails for many years since I’ve tried to work this out for myself, and I can tell you from experience that their winter prices in particular are really good. I’ve seen fares starting under $400 RT between New York or Boston and Amsterdam during most winters, and I remember a few times where they were actually below $300. These prices are before the extra taxes and fees, but they are still as good or better than most other airlines to Amsterdam.

Ten new cities now have nonstop flights into Amsterdam

Schiphol planesThe rules for which airlines can fly into which airports changed a bit as of March 30, and this should be good news for quite a few travelers to Amsterdam. Ten new cities will have weekly scheduled nonstop flights into and out of Schiphol Airport, bringing the total to 257. The new schedule only goes through October 25, 2008, so it remains to be seen if some of the new destinations are only seasonal.

Finding cheap airfare to Amsterdam should be challenging during the busy travel season when fuel prices have never been higher, but at least many people will be able to reach the city without a stopover, or in some cases with one fewer plane change on the way. Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam was the 5th busiest passenger airport in Europe in 2007 after London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt International, and Madrid Barajas.

The new cities and routes are:

Shopping for Amsterdam airfare from North America

KLM SchipholYou may remember not long ago when I mentioned an interesting article on BootsnAll.com that tested 7 major airfare sites to see which one was the cheapest. The results of those trials were a bit surprising, but that was just the first in a 4-part series that tested those sites in other areas as well.

The series of articles has recently concluded by trying to determine which is the best all-around airfare site. Again, the conclusions are quite interesting and probably not what you might expect. Unfortunately for our non-North American friends, the articles only concentrate on sites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Priceline, and only their US and Canadian operations. Several of these same companies have UK or Europe sites, and the results probably carry over for them as well, but you can’t draw the same firm conclusions that the series did with the North American versions.

Spring airfare prices to Amsterdam

KLM cloudsI’ve been tracking Amsterdam airfares from various US cities for quite a while now and I wanted to point out that we are just about to go over the annual lip that separates the end of the cheap winter airfares from the pre-summer airfares that can be much higher.

In my case I’m planning my annual Amsterdam research trip from Portland and I’m looking to go for about 4 weeks beginning in mid March. Right now I can find quite a few flights during my possible dates for $550 including all taxes and fees. But when I push my dates back just one week the best fare is $769, and that’s a Wednesday through Wednesday trip, so weekends might even be higher.
