Sounds to me like the government is trying to fight crime by shutting down the tourist industry. This has got to be the most backward thing ever, and I already know that the RLD is never going to be shut down because it just generates too much income by attracting tourists.

If the government wants to get criminal elements out of Amsterdam then it should do so in the traditional manner; by arresting the criminals. Shutting down the RLD will only put this "riff raff" out of work, and they won't have trouble finding new work.

The idea of shutting the RLD down is so ludicrous that I think the mafia might be behind it.

Amsterdam with a reduced Red Light district and Paris with a smoking ban in all cafes and night clubs, what's the happening to the world? Look what happened to Times Square. Fortunately, for those of us travelers who enjoy a walk on the grittier side of the street, the town planners will never completely succeed - when one neighborhood spruces up, another hot spot pops to the surface.
