Aloha, Great information. I am taking 12 friends on Safari this Sept. 1st and we will spend 3 days in Amsterdam. We are really looking forward to visiting this great city. We will arrive to Schipol, then take the train to Bruge for 3 nights, then come back and stay in Amsterdam before going on to Africa. Can someone tell me if I should purchase our International train tickets before we leave the US? I see on a few sites that if we travel on the Hi-speed Thalys train, we do need a reservation. But other sites say, just buy tickets at Schipol once you get there. . .any advice?? Mahalo.

Im in Portugal right now on vacation and have decided to make a quick trip to Amsterdam for several days before i return. This article was very detailed and very good. I find it interesting theyºre banning tobacco and didnºt know the local herb isnºt smoked outside and only in specific shops. Off to the ªcoffee shopsª I go.

Nice post. I definately disagree that dutch sounds ugly as a language. And yes, the dutch enjoy speaking other languages, but of course they always prefer their mother tongue and they LOVE it if a foreigner makes an effort to learn (even a little bit of) dutch! Great article, but I have to disagree on some points. Renting bikes is easy and great fun, just make sure you are a confident enough cyclist, otherwise it can be a bit scary. If you keep an eye out for where the Dutch leave their bikes you should be fine leaving your bike there. A little common sense and courtesy go a long way when cycling around any big city. When I visited Amsterdam with friends we stayed in the Redlight District and it wasn’t intimidating at all, even at night. It’s always busy and even for a group of girls it wasn’t remotely scary. Chips with mayonnaise are yummy!

Good article,and all spot on.Just on the point about the smoking law as it relates to coffeeshops;most of them now offer a tobacco alternative free of charge,which is very handy:)
