Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Centre (formerly Golden Tulip Inntel)

If you have an old booking confirmation or a guidebook that says "Golden Tulip Hotel Inntel," this is the same building. The hotel on Nieuwezijds Kolk dropped the Golden Tulip name and now trades as Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Centre, a 4-star hotel run by the Dutch Inntel group, which also has hotels in Zaandam, The Hague and Utrecht. The photo dates from 2008, so the sign over the door won't match what you see today.

It still isn't a cheap Amsterdam hotel, and it doesn't pretend to be. What you pay for is a business-hotel standard in the middle of the old centre: proper soundproofing, air conditioning, real furniture, and a sauna in the basement. A lot of the budget places nearby give you a steep staircase and a room you can touch both walls of.

The hotel says it's a 5-minute walk from Centraal Station, and that's about right if you aren't dragging a suitcase over the cobbles. Dam Square is just as close in the other direction, and the main shopping streets start behind the hotel. The little square out front has no through traffic, so it's quieter at night than you'd expect this close to the station.

The trade-off is the neighbourhood itself. A lot of the restaurants and bars around the Centraal Station area live off tourist foot traffic and charge for it. The better nightlife is at Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein, a 15 to 20 minute walk or a short tram ride. Coming by car? The hotel sits opposite the underground Q-Park Nieuwendijk garage, and it asks you to reserve a parking space in advance. Rooms

According to the hotel's room page, every room has air conditioning, free wifi with Chromecast on the TV, a kettle, a mini fridge and a laptop safe. The main types:

• City Single: 16 m² with one extra-wide 140 cm bed. Good for solo business trips, tight for anyone else.
• City Double and City Twin: 21 m², king-size bed or two singles. This is the standard room most people book.
• Spa Room: 25 m² with a large bubble bath in the room.
• Wellness rooms and suites: some come with a private sauna and a round whirlpool, and the top of the range is the Monumental Suite.

Facilities

• Wellness Club with a Finnish sauna and Turkish steam bath, free for guests, open 07:00 to 22:00. It's a Dutch-style sauna, so swimwear isn't allowed. A small gym keeps the same hours.
• Breakfast buffet with a glass of bubbles, served 07:00 to 10:00 on weekdays and until 11:00 at weekends (details).
• A bar, but no restaurant. Dinner and room service come from Humphrey's next door.
• Check-in from 15:00, check-out by 11:00. Late check-out costs €20 per extra hour, as of 2026, and you can leave bags at reception before and after your stay (hotel FAQ).
• Guests must be 18 or older to book, the whole building is non-smoking (the fine is €150), and pets aren't allowed, though assistance dogs are.

Prices

The 2008 rate card that used to sit here is long gone. Rates move with the season and with what's on in the city, so check live prices on the hotel's own site, which promises its lowest price for direct bookings. Expect the biggest jumps around King's Day on 27 April, the Amsterdam Dance Event in October, and New Year.

Budget for Amsterdam's tourist tax on top: 12.5% of the room rate, excluding VAT. The hotel says it isn't included in rates booked on its website, so the total at check-out will be higher than the rate you saw.

Who it suits
