August in Amsterdam: Events, Weather, and Travel Tips

Much of Europe takes August off, so expect crowds in Amsterdam all month. Plenty of locals leave town, but the visitors more than make up for them. You don't need an excuse to come in summer, though August hands you a few anyway: Pride and its Canal Parade, a traveling theater festival in a park, a classical music festival that pops up in canal houses, and one of the city's oddest street parties. Terraces spill onto every square, and in the long evenings the city lives outdoors.

Pride Amsterdam and the Canal Parade

This is the highlight of the gay Amsterdam calendar and one of the best-known Pride events in Europe. Amsterdam hosted WorldPride in 2026, and the regular festival now runs for about nine days from late July into August. Pride Amsterdam lists the 2027 dates as 31 July to 8 August, with the Canal Parade on Saturday 7 August 2027.

The Canal Parade is the famous part: a procession of decorated boats sailing through the canals past huge crowds, most of whom just came for the party. Around it you'll find the Pride Walk, which traditionally finishes at Pride Park in Vondelpark (with a market, sports and an open-air stage), an open-air film festival on Mercatorplein, and street parties and club nights across the city. If you're not interested in Pride itself, it's no reason to stay away, but book your room early, because that week fills fast.

De Parade

De Parade is a traveling theater festival that sets up its tents in four Dutch cities each summer, and its Amsterdam leg takes over Martin Luther Kingpark, about 4 km south of Centraal Station. Think fairground crossed with a fringe festival: around 95 short shows (about 30 minutes each) in theater tents, plus music, a vintage carousel, food stands and a kids' program. A lot of it works fine if you don't speak Dutch.

In 2026 it ran in Amsterdam from 24 July to 9 August. According to De Parade's 2026 information page, the grounds opened daily at 14:00 (18:00 on the opening Friday), closing at midnight Sunday to Thursday and 2:00 on Friday and Saturday. Entry to the grounds was €10 plus a €1.50 city fee, €4.50 for ages 12 to 17, free under 12, and €6.50 after 22:00, with individual shows ticketed separately. I amsterdam says the 2027 edition returns on the penultimate weekend of July, so most of it again falls in early August.

Grachtenfestival (Canal Festival)

The Grachtenfestival is ten days of classical music and jazz by young musicians in venues you'd normally never get into, from inner courtyards and rooftops to churches, museums and canal houses. The festival's site gives the 2027 dates as 13 to 22 August. It's the best way to see the inside of the canal ring, and a good counterweight to Pride week.

Hartjesdag on the Zeedijk

Hartjesdag is an old Amsterdam festival, revived as a neighborhood party on the Zeedijk, the city's oldest street, at the edge of the Red Light District. The tradition is that women dress as men and men dress as women, and anyone can join in, with prizes for the best costumes and acts. The main day is the third Monday in August: 17 August in 2026, and I amsterdam lists Monday 16 August 2027, from 14:00 to 23:00. Expect costumes, cabaret and live music in the cafes, and long tables of food down the street.

What happened to the Uitmarkt and Landjuweel?

The old version of this page sent you to the Uitmarkt, the free preview of the new cultural season on the last weekend of August. The last Amsterdam Uitmarkt was in 2022. Its successor, DE OPENING, moves around the country, and the 2026 edition was in Eindhoven. The Landjuweel festival at the Ruigoord artists' village west of the city still happens, but it has moved to July (23 to 27 July in 2026).

Also worth knowing: SAIL Amsterdam, the tall-ships festival that drew over 2.5 million people in August 2025, only comes around every five years. The next one is in 2030.

August weather in Amsterdam

Summer in Amsterdam is usually pleasant, not scorching, and sometimes a bit gloomy. August can be sunny for weeks or gray and showery just as easily. Based on KNMI's 1991-2020 averages for Schiphol (via Wikipedia):

• Average high: 22.4°C (72°F)
• Average low: 13.4°C (56°F)
• Rain: about 99 mm (3.9 in), spread over roughly 12 days
• Sunshine: about 204 hours for the month

That rainfall figure makes August the wettest month of the year on average, mostly because of summer showers, so pack a light rain jacket. Real heat is rare but not unheard of: the hottest August day at Schiphol in KNMI's daily records is 34.5°C (94°F), set in 1990, and the station passed 34°C again on 14 August 2026. Getting here

August is peak season for transatlantic flights, and with half of Europe flying around the continent at the same time, fares stay high, especially at the start and end of the month. Waiting for prices to drop is usually a losing bet. Book early, and read our tips on flights to Schiphol.

Where to stay

Unsurprisingly, Amsterdam hostels are packed all month and charging peak rates. Book early, because hostels rarely discount and many sell out. The hotel scene is tight too: budget places fill up at their highest prices, especially during Pride week. August is a slow month for business travel, though, so it's worth checking 3-star and 4-star hotels for deals before you settle for a basic room.

Whatever you book, Amsterdam's tourist tax is 12.5% of the room price (excluding VAT) as of 2026, so check whether your quote includes it. Many older hotels have no air conditioning, which matters on the few hot nights.

Tips for an August visit

• Book timed tickets for the big museums and the Anne Frank House well ahead. The Anne Frank House releases tickets six weeks out and sells out in summer.
• Crowds thin out in Amsterdam-Noord and Oost. The free ferry to Noord is a quick escape.
• Smoking cannabis on the street is banned in the Red Light District, with a €100 fine, and under a city decree in force until March 2027 bars in the heart of the district close at 2:00 at weekends. See our coffeeshop guide before you go.
